The location
Kibaha is located about 40 km west of Dar es Salaam along an important road in the heartland. Since the independence Kibaha serves as administration of the coastal region and in 1962  the scandinavian countries established an integrated education center
on a former sisal plantation with primary and secondary school, vocational school and also a hospital and a dairy cattle farm.

Tanzania's school system
After seven years in primary school all pupils take an examination and only the best of them can attend public secondary schools. After four years they reach the O-level and after further two years of school the pupils achieve the A-level.

The schools in Kibaha
The boarding school for boys (Kibaha Secondary School) launched in 1965 with 110 pupils. They come from across Tanzania and live in four large blocks of flats, where the younger children sleep in dormitories, the older ones live in small two-bedrooms.

For a long time K.S.S. develops to one of the best schools in Tanzania. Today it counts 750 pupils who are taught by 51 teachers. At A-level the school is specialised in  science and economy, the pupils can choose from the following combinations:

  • physics / chemistry / biology
  • physics / chemistry / mathematics
  • chemistry / biology / agriculture
  • economics / business studies / accounting.

The broadening of the subjects to information technology has started (a few computers and a room already exist), but a lot of technical equipment and the nowadays very important internet access is still lacking.

Due to the excellent results of the K.S.S. in the national examination, it was appointed special school nine years ago together with five other schools. Unfortunately this has not led to an increase of financial support to the school. Three of the six science laboratories need to be renovated urgently, also the flats for pupils, the kitchen, the dining room and energy supply (e.g. solar panels for warm water) - everywhere the money for necessary renewal is lacking.

Though the situation at K.S.S. is better than that of other schools in Tanzania, we see your and our support meaningful if we consider that the future elites of the country are trained there.

Also part of the large "Kibaha Education Centre" is the Tumbi Secondary School (T.S.S.), which was built in 1999 for the growing number of pupils coming from Kibaha and surroundings. It is no boarding school, but the pupils live at home and come to school for the lessons only (from 7 to 15.30 o'clock). Here, the number of pupils is increasing, too. In 2006 there were 244 girls (!) and 230 boys who are taught by 33 teachers.

T.S.S. achieved also very good results in the O-Level-examinations during the last years. A-level is not offered there.

We were able to visit both schools in 2006 and we have a long-standing, faithful relationship to the heads of school Mrs. Luhaga (T.S.S.) and  Mr. Kayenga (K.S.S.).

Donations for Kibaha Education Center
Please support us in our effort to enable the best pupils from primary schools -
independently from the income of their parents - to acquire their A-level.

The project manager was able to ensure oneself of the good work at Kibaha Education Center, but also the lack of funds for forward-looking investments like computer training, the use of solar energy, school books etc. That is why we ask for your help.

Please transfer your donation on DETAF's donation account no. 100768011 at Bensberger Bank e.G. (bank code 370 621 24) with the subject „Kibaha Education Center“. We thank you very much for your support.
